Time To Pet link

In this job description, we try to answer many of the common questions applicants have about professional pet sitting and dog walking. It's a lot of hard work, but one of the most rewarding careers!

At this point in time, we are hiring Independent Contractors (I can explain more about what this means during an interview) but will be switching over to a more traditional Employee model in January 2024.
Below is a summary of some of the job duties for the pet sitters and dog walkers of Jamie's Petsitting. This is a thorough list, but should not be considered complete.

  • Accept visits through our online system
  • Complete visits during time block requested by clients
  • Clock in & out of visits using our scheduling app
  • Read the client’s profile and notes before each visit
  • Follow all client instructions (sometimes several pages worth)
  • Be physically capable of spending most the day on your feet and/or walking dogs, including strong pullers
  • Be physically capable of lifting 40lbs or more (cat litter, heavy trash, large dogs in an emergency)
  • Take pictures of the happy pets and send informative updates to clients
  • Form relationships with the pets by giving them plenty of attention and love
  • Form a trusting relationship with the human clients
  • Clean up any pet messes and maintain pet health
  • Be able to identify an emergency and respond with appropriate urgency
  • Double-check all notes before administering medications, and administer the correct medications every time
  • Keep track of tasks done at visits through our various communication channels and checklists
  • Notice subtle preferences and behavior patterns of pets
  • Identify behavioral patterns and/or physical symptoms that may indicate stress or a health issue in pets
  • Keep pets and their environment healthy, clean, and safe
  • Maintain great communication with the office and with coworkers through team chat app
  • Bring in mail and packages
  • Be flexible in case of last-minute booking or last-minute cancellation
  • Keep all client information confidential
  • Make the safety of pets and the security of the client’s home your top priority

Petsitting visits are generally 15 or 30 minutes long, although we do occasionally offer 60 minute visits as well. This does not include drive time to & from each client's house. The time at each visit is generally spent preparing meals for pets, giving medication if needed, walking dogs, indoor and outdoor playtime, general cleaning, refreshing water dishes, scooping litter boxes, cleaning up pet messes, taking cute pictures of happy pets, and sending an update to the client.

You will also check over the house for any problems, bring mail and newspapers inside, water indoor and outdoor plants, and take care of any other general household tasks included with our services. Pet sitting visits are completed at approximately the same time each day to keep things consistent for the pets. Vacation care visits are generally booked for 3-8 days at a time.

Dog walking visits are generally booked on the same days each week. They are good, consistent income, and are 15 or 30 minutes long (weather permitting). Duties include walking the dog, picking up & disposing of their poop, wiping feet (if wet out), and refreshing their water bowls.

Professional pet sitting and dog walking is independent work. It’s enjoyable, typically low stress, and active.

Pet sitting and dog walking is a business that is inherently busiest during the times people travel, which includes weekends, summers, and holidays. You will need to work at least 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and 4th of July). I also make sure you will get time with your families. We typically take turns scheduling time off for family on the days leading up to (or after) the actual holiday.

Most of your time at work will be spent at the clients' homes doing visits and taking care of pets. From time to time, you will need to pick up or drop off supplies from our lockbox. Other than that, you will go straight to the client’s home to start work.

Because our pet sitters and dog walkers drive to visits multiple times per day, we only hire candidates who live in our service area, or very close to it. See map below.
